Computer Plus One –
Microsoft Quick Case Study
Situation:
When Per Moeller-Olsen founded Computer Plus One in San Diego, CA, he knew a major pillar supporting the foundation of his
company would be Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (SBS
2003). He had been introduced to SBS 4.0 in late 1997 when he met a
Microsoft representative at an event in Brussels, Belgium, and received
a copy of Small Business Server version 4.0. “I could see the potential
for SBS,” Moeller-Olsen says. “We knew the problems with all the
peer-to-peer networks with no controls over access.” So, in creating his
new technology consulting practice in America, he focused heavily on SBS.
In December 1997, Moeller-Olsen had begun implementing SBS 4.0 in
Belgium. His two-person operation found tremendous success, installing
about 25 SBS servers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark. With his
wife, Nancy, Moeller-Olsen came to America in 2003 and established
Computer Plus One in San Diego. During the next three years, he found an
eager market for 11 more SBS 2003 installations. In working with his
clients, Moeller-Olsen always prepares thoroughly, spending days taking
notes and analysis for customers before meeting with them, so he is
ready to answer any and all questions.
“All our SBS 2003 installations have been 100% successful, because I
have so much hands-on experience with all versions of SBS in my own test
environments; I prepare extensively before an install; and I use the
wizards that come with SBS,” Moeller-Olsen reports. “Over the years my
customers have started out with version 4.0 and have upgraded to 4.0a,
4.5, 2000 and now 2003. All my customers have upgraded all along the way
and continue to be successful with their SBS servers.”
Moeller-Olsen believes SBS 2003 has won over so many small businesses
because “it is a very good solution, has very good functionality, and
the price is right.” Moreover, he affirms, SBS 2003 is good for both the
customer and the consultant. It allows the customer to move to a server
and enjoy the benefits of client-server networking, providing one
central location where all information can be stored and retrieved
securely by all employees. These distinct benefits include shared
calendars; advanced e-mail capabilities; and access to applications,
files and e-mail from anywhere in the world. Microsoft partners benefit,
as well, from the increased service revenues that result from enabling
SBS 2003 features over a period of time as the customer grows and looks
for additional efficiencies.
Computer Plus One now focuses on home offices and small-business
computer support. Moeller-Olsen has partnered with Soundoff Computing to
provide application and database development along with networking
services, and he has used a number of marketing techniques to promote
the full range of solutions he furnishes to small businesses. With
Microsoft FrontPage, he and his wife designed a Web site (
www.computerplusone.com ) which, among other information, includes a
section specifically about the benefits of SBS 2003. He has also
obtained good results from search-engine advertising, spending just $200
to $300 a month for leads. “I get customers that way,” he says. “Every
month I get a very hot call.” He has also used direct mail and benefits
from word-of-mouth endorsements. A number of referrals have also come
from his participation in an SBS users group in San Diego.
Results:
By joining with Microsoft partners to expand his capabilities, by using
Microsoft tools to build his marketing programs, and by focusing on the
popularity of SBS 2003, Moeller-Olsen has grown his business rapidly. In
short order his San Diego SBS 2003 customer base went from zero to
eleven installs with very substantial revenue growth every year from
installations services and ongoing support and training services; and
this has helped his customers become more competitive. “In some cases,
we’ve been able to take three separate server products—a domain
controller, Microsoft Exchange, and a backup server—and combine those
functions with SBS 2003,” he says. “With SBS 2003, now a customer with
three people looks like the big companies, with a common domain name for
dedicated email addresses relating to order delivery, sales and general
customer communication; and employees can respond to other team members
or customers from home.”
Moeller-Olsen says the greatest customer reaction has been to SBS 2003’s
remote desktop feature, with the integration of Windows Server 2003,
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2003, Microsoft
SharePoint Services, and shared facsimile technologies. Customers have
now resolved the data backup problems they had with peer-to-peer
networks by swapping external USB hard drives and by using SBS 2003’s
Volume Shadow Copy Service, which enables them to restore deleted files
by going back days or weeks to an earlier system status. And customers
running SBS 2003 and using Smart Phones and PDA's running the new
Windows Mobile 5.0 Operating System will instantly have SBS 2003 email,
contacts, calendar and will be more fully synchronized, any time and any
place. The extraordinary features he can offer through SBS 2003 have
allowed Moeller-Olsen to gain confidence and additional business from
his customers. They rely on his advice and services.
“SBS 2003 is a very good solution and has helped me build a successful
business,” says Moeller-Olsen. “From day one, SBS 2003 was a top
offering.”
Callout quote:
“This is a tremendous product. Everywhere I’ve gone with SBS, it’s been
a 100% success.”
